How Can I Know Jesus and Be Saved?

The Only Way to Heaven is outlined below in these Bible verses, which explain the plan of salvation (the way to Heaven) through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Each of these verses are from the New Living Translation (NLT) of the Bible.

I’m a good person so why wouldn’t I go to heaven?

Romans 3:23 – For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Romans 3:10 – As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous—not even one.”

Romans 5:12 – When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.

The One who created the universe and everything in it is HOLY. He has set forth laws for his creation to obey. They begin with the 10 Commandments. You might consider yourself ‘good’ compared to most people, but how do you measure up against the laws that God has asked you to follow? Have you ever told a little white lie? Then you are a liar. “For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws.”   James 2:10

Plain and simple, ANY disobedience to God is sin.

THE ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN…

IF YOU DIED TONIGHT, DO YOU KNOW FOR CERTAIN WHERE YOU WOULD BE SPENDING ETERNITY?

Disobedience to a holy, perfect God deserves an eternal consequence. He has written His laws in our hearts and on our conscience. He has given us His holy WORD, the Bible. No judge would let the guilty go unpunished or go free, would he? Nor can a righteous holy God let a sinful man go unpunished… but God so LOVES you, whom He created in His own image, that He has provided a way out of punishment. He sent His only son to die in your place.

If sin is such a big deal, how can there be hope for me?

Romans 6:23 – For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

After what I’ve done to hurt God, why would He willingly

die for me?

Romans 5:8 – But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

John 3:16 says, “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” When Jesus was dying on the cross, He was laughed at, spit upon, cursed and mocked. Yet He cried out, “…Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.…” (Luke 23:34) It is with this kind of love that Jesus died in your place… knowing every evil word, thought and deed you would commit. He loves you no matter what you have done, even to the point of death. Now that’s a powerful love!

If I want this gift of eternal life, how can I be saved?

Romans 10:9-10 – If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

You cannot be saved by doing good works or trying to be a good person. Ephesians 2:8,9 says, “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.” We can only be saved by confessing our sins and placing our faith in Jesus Christ, the son of God, who paid for our debt (sin) by dying on the cross. We must also surrender our lives to Him, placing Him in charge of everything we are, because we now belong to Him. Jesus began His preaching with repentance. In Matthew 4:17 He says, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” To repent means to change your mind or to turn away from and go in another direction. In order to repent, you must have true sorrow for what you’ve done wrong. 2 Corinthians 7:10 says, “For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.” When you get caught doing something wrong, you feel guilty only because you got caught. That’s worldly sorrow and there’s no real regret for that kind of sorrow. Godly sorrow is a deep conviction and remorse so strong, it makes us change our direction. According to the Bible, it is God’s Holy Spirit that convicts us of our sin. (John 16:7-8) Do you ever feel convicted (guilty) after you've done something wrong?

I’ve asked Jesus to come into my heart and be the Lord of my life. How can I be sure God heard me and has accepted me as His own?

Romans 10:13 – For “Everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved.”

John 1:12 tells us, “But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.” That means God heard you say you would place your faith in Him as your Lord and Savior and He accepts (receives) you, just as you are. You have no reason to fear death now because Jesus has power over death with His blood, shed on the cross. He paid your debt in full and you will now spend eternity with Him!

Now that I’m saved, what should I do?

Romans 10:17 – So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.
